Associate Vice President of Campaign and Major Gifts
Development Department (RFT)

Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice President of Development, the Associate Vice President of Campaign and Major Gifts will serve as Campaign Manager for LACMA's Transformation Capital Campaign as well as manage the Directors of Major Donor Groups and Major Donor Special Events to develop strategies and improve tactics for donor solicitations, stewardship and cultivation. Works directly with the Vice President of Development to guide the solicitation of gifts for the capital campaign as well as securing annual major gift support for the museum.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Monitors and organizes all aspects of the Capital and Endowment Campaign, including tracking prospects, preparing meeting agendas and minutes, tracking timelines and deadlines, and updating campaign reports, among other duties.
  • Develops strategies for prospect solicitations; creates proposals and works with solicitors to ensure effective cultivation and solicitation of six- and seven-figure gifts.
  • In weekly group and one-on-one meetings with Development professional staff responsible for major donor groups, including Director's Circle, President's Circle, Collectors Council, the Director of Council Activities, including the 11 volunteer councils, develops and/or approves strategies for donor cultivation and solicitation.
  • Maintains a portfolio of prospects: identifies, cultivates, solicits, and tracks gifts to the campaign as well as raising annual major donor support for the museum.
  • Develops and tracks the campaign budget and revenue projections.  Manages required expenditures within approved budget.
  • Oversees implementation of donor recognition efforts for both campaign and annual support.
  • Full supervisory responsibility for employees within the job classifications of Major Gifts, Campaign, Director's and President's Circles, Major Donor Events, and Council Activities, as well as support staff.

The selected individual will be well-rounded in the development field as a donor-oriented leader with the ability to set, pursue, and reach goals. Ideal candidates will have past examples of tenacity, decisiveness, multitasking abilities and flexibility in achieving results. Effective communication of LACMA's vision and the museum's impact on the community is essential. Superior interpersonal and organizational skills, verbal and written presentation abilities, diplomacy, and strategic thinking are required. Establishing a strong rapport with donors and community leaders of varying ages, work experience, educational accomplishments, and cultural, social and financial backgrounds is essential.

  • Bachelor's Degree from a recognized college or university.
  • Eight to ten years of demonstrated, successful fundraising  experience.  
  • Experience and involvement in fundraising efforts for six- and seven-figure gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Capital and endowment campaign experience a plus.
  • Strong, effective, and demonstrable written and oral communication, relationship-building and presentation skills.
  • Must be highly organized, self-motivated and result-oriented, as well as a "team player" who can work well with staff and trustees and interact tactfully with donors.
  • Ability and willingness to prioritize and organize multiple activities.
  • Ability and willingness to recognize and manage complex issues creatively and effectively.
  • Ability and willingness to develop and implement short- and long-range goals and strategic plans.

Curator, Department Head, Chinese and Korean Art
Chinese and Korean Art Department (RFT)

The Chinese and Korean Art Department seeks a highly qualified museum professional to serve as the Curator of Chinese Art and Department Head. The candidate should be an experienced scholar of Chinese art who can work collegially and collaboratively with the Director and Deputy Director and other sections within the institution, especially Education, Conservation, Development, and other curatorial departments.

The Chinese and Korean Department currently houses over 1,800 works of art. The Chinese collection is comprehensive, consisting of 1,400 works, illustrating most artistic developments across a time span of nearly 5,000 years. Notable strengths are archaic bronzes, ceramics and lacquers.

The Chinese and Korean Art Curator/Department Head's primary duties will be to function as the lead institutional specialist for the Chinese Art collection; independently research, catalogue, and publish the permanent collection; be responsible for both LACMA-organized and touring exhibitions from other institutions; actively pursue acquisitions; provide educational lectures and docent training; assist in fundraising and grant writing for acquisitions, exhibitions, and a capital campaign; cultivate and maintain donor, trustee and community relations and professional affiliations; and collaborate with the East Asian Art Council, the department's support group.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in art history and a minimum of seven to ten years related experience, or an equivalent combination. Appropriate language skills and previous supervisory experience are also mandatory. In addition, the position requires advanced English-language communication and interpersonal skills; aptitude for connoisseurship; critical scholarly record and ambition; contribution to the intellectual life of the museum; thoughtful initiative and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively; and the demonstrated capability to write for a general as well as a scholarly audience.

Assistant/Associate Curator of Chinese Art
Chinese and Korean Art Department (RFT)

The Chinese and Korean Art Department seeks a highly qualified professional with museum experience to serve as an assistant or associate curator of Chinese Art. This position offers an opportunity to work with the most comprehensive collection of Chinese art in the Western Hemisphere and in one of the most active departments in the field. The person selected must be a team player, able to work closely with the Curator of the department and other sections within the institution, especially Education, Docents, Conservation, Registrars, Development, and other curatorial departments.  The assistant or associate curator’s primary duties will be to: function as the lead institutional specialist for the Chinese art collection; independently research, interpret (writing/composing labels, didactics, gallery guides, electronic media and museum website), catalogue, and publish the permanent collection; participate in acquisitions and exhibitions/installations; provide educational lectures, information, and docent training; instruct and supervise departmental interns and volunteers; provide public and scholarly art expertise, both written and oral; assist in fundraising and grant-writing for acquisitions, exhibitions, and a capital campaign; cultivate and maintain donor/trustee/community relations and professional affiliations; and collaborate with the East Asian Art Council, the department’s support group. 

Qualifications

Ph.D. strongly preferred, but will consider ABD or MA in East Asian art history if accompanied by a minimum of three years of museum experience working with Chinese art. Prior museum and/or related experience will determine the level of the position. Requires proficiency in Chinese and at least one other East Asian language; advanced English-language communication and interpersonal skills; aptitude for connoisseurship; critical scholarly record and ambition; contribution to the intellectual life of the museum; thoughtful initiative and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively; and the demonstrated capability to write for a general as well as a scholarly audience. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is currently planning an unprecedented expansion and restructuring of its permanent collection galleries, and the immediate future promises to be a remarkable opportunity for a high-energy, dedicated individual.

Executive Assistant and Board Liaison           
Development Department (RFT)

Reporting to the Vice President of Development, the Executive Assistant and Board Liaison provides centralized upper level administrative support and will also serve as the Museum’s designated employee liaison for the LACMA Board of Trustees by being responsive to the Board’s social and organizational needs as they relate to LACMA. 

Some duties include: provide administrative support to VP of Development; coordinate staff meetings and maintain the VP of Development’s calendar; draft customized documents, letters and memos; provide analytical development, reporting, tracking and control support for financial budgeting pertaining to the Development department; organize events and administer projects for the Board of Trustees; coordinate new Trustee mentor and orientation program needs; produce Board of Trustees Manual annually and maintain all related files and records.

The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in business administration or a related field, and at least five years of experience working with high level executives, coordinating events, and administrative support functions. Experience with fundraising strategies and high-level donors is preferred. A combination of related education, training, and experience will be accepted.

The ideal candidate will also have demonstrated strength in organizing, prioritizing, and handling multiple tasks to meet established deadlines in spite of frequent interruptions; respond quickly and accurately to changing tasks and priorities; be analytical, detail-oriented, flexible and efficient; exercise sound judgment and decision making and handle confidential and sensitive information effectively; exercise appropriate initiative and follow-through on a daily basis; have solid working knowledge of computers and word-processing, spreadsheet, database and/or other software applications currently used by the department; strong service orientation; ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.

Group and Onsite Sales Manager           
Membership Department (RFT)

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is looking for an energetic and organized individual to manage the onsite box office team. This individual will manage a staff of about ten people, and will be responsible for providing excellent customer service, increasing onsite membership sales, and increasing LACMA’s group sales business.

This is an exciting time for the museum—with Phase II of the LACMA Transformationright around the corner. The right candidate will have both management experience and sales and marketing experience, and will be able to successfully leverage LACMA’s permanent collection, special exhibitions, and the Transformation (new gallery spaces, new art acquisitions) into increased membership and group sales revenue.

Responsibilities include: Develop plan and budget for the year to convert visitors into members, develop all membership brochures and onsite promotional signage, work with volunteer manager and volunteers to staff membership table, work with Welcome Center staff on special membership offers, and develop premiums for onsite membership conversions; supervise, train, and review Welcome Center volunteers and paid staff; develop plan and budget, maintain relationships with national and international visitor bureaus, attend tour group conferences, maintain tour operator database, develop all marketing materials (direct mail, brochures, e-mail, etc.) to increase profitability of group sales, develop group packages with hotels and cultural/other institutions in the Los Angeles area, and greet groups.

This is a full-time position with part of the work week occurring over the weekend.

A B.A. in art history, marketing, or communications, and four to five years of experience in marketing, group sales and/or tourism—including copy writing, design and print production, budgeting, generating reports to track goals, and customer service—are required. Three years in a supervisory role is essential. An equivalent combination of related education and experience can be substituted. Good writing skills and knowledge of various computer applications are required. Council Activities Liaison           
Development Department (RFT)

Reporting to the Director of Council Activities, the Council Activities Liaison will administer a standardized operating working model with ten art museum council volunteer groups by providing work direction and monitoring the work product of six Council Assistants. Additionally, the incumbent will provide administrative and general office support for the Director of Council Activities and individual councils as needed.

Some duties include: maintain ongoing relationships with the leaders of the ten art museum council volunteer groups by attending meetings and events; monitor all travel-related requests for trips to be conducted with curators and council members, and submit the necessary documentation for approval; establish and maintain working relationships with travel providers to fulfill requests as needed; execute logistics for council fundraising activities, including special events, lectures, dinners, and other volunteer cultivation events; coordinate monthly meetings with Council Activities Committee, including creation of the agenda and coordinating communication between the councils; assist the Director of Council Activities with budget needs (annual budget preparation, tracking of budget during fiscal year, etc.); serve as confidential assistant to the Director of Council Activities by providing administrative support, general office support, and research compilation.

The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in art history or a related field, and four to seven years of administrative experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Computer proficiency—including MS Office, PowerPoint, mail merging, and Excel spreadsheet experience—is required.

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to build rapport and work diplomatically and effectively with the public, as well as represent executives in a professional manner to others both inside and outside of the organization. The incumbent will be able to effectively provide work direction and delegate task appropriately to other staff members.

Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship (3)          
Conservation Center (RFT)

The Conservation Center at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will award a total of three Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in the Conservation Center.  The five conservation sections—Paintings, Textiles, Paper, Objects and Conservation Research—each invite applicants.  The fellowships, which are full-time positions for one year, include a stipend of $28,080 ($2,340 per month) plus benefits.  A $2,000 travel allowance for study/research will be allocated at the discretion of the section head and the Director of Conservation.

The fellowship will focus on the study, examination, and treatment of works of art in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Successful candidates will gain considerable experience treating works of art in well equipped, production-oriented conservation laboratories. Conservation involvement in permanent collection exhibitions and special exhibitions will enhance training opportunities.  Collaborative projects with the Center’s Research Laboratory are possible. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to participate in informal lectures, symposia, and workshops and to visit and collaborate with nearby cultural institutions. The deadline for applications is March 13, 2009. Successful candidates will be notified by April 1, 2009.

Fellowship positions will be available beginning Fall 2009.

Eligibility

Candidates will be considered who have graduated from a recognized conservation training program, with the appropriate specializations, or who have similar training or experience. For the Conservation Research section, a master’s degree in chemistry or materials science or equivalent training and experience is required.

Camilla Chandler Frost Internship (2)          
Conservation Center (RFT)

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art Conservation Center is offering two internships for summer study in the following areas: objects conservation, textiles conservation, paintings conservation, paper conservation and conservation science.

Description:  The Camilla Chandler Frost Conservation Internship Program Endowment provides funding for travel from a conservation student’s school and a stipend while working at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.  This year’s stipend is $320 per week ($2,560 for eight weeks, $3,200 ten weeks, or $3,840 twelve weeks). The stipend is intended to pay for food and lodging. A travel allowance of $1,000 is provided to reimburse the student for round trip travel from the graduate school location to Los Angeles and to offset relocation expenses (as appropriate).

Internship Opportunities

Conservation Related Projects: Projects will be tailored to the student’s skill level to enable the student to gain experience with basic conservation procedures in a large museum setting.

Conservation Research Projects: The conservation science laboratory is currently undertaking a number of research projects involving the examination, documentation, and analysis of works or art. These projects should appeal to students interested in obtaining experience on a number of instruments routinely used in conservation research.

Questions regarding specific activities and projects should be addressed to the following members of staff:

Term:  The internship will run from eight to twelve weeks, depending upon the agreement between the student, section head and the Director of Conservation.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the C.C. Frost Summer Internship Program, a candidate must be enrolled full time in a recognized graduate school conservation program or as an advanced undergraduate chemistry major and must successfully complete the museum’s employment application and background check performed by LACMA’s Human Resources Department. The Conservation Center receives very few J-l Visas annually; therefore international students should be aware of this limitation.
