The Manifesto

The Challenge

More than 100 people planned, organized, and installed NOW:
  • 78 staff members from 21 museum departments
  • 20 museum volunteers and docents
  • 17 outside contractors

The artists developed proposals, sketches, models, and budgets in collaboration with staff, which often meant long discussions and numerous problem-solving sessions.

Two architects designed the exhibition, provided assistance and advice to the artists, and created a new kind of space at LACMA that could be both a home for artists’ projects for kids and an art studio for people of all ages.

LACMALab was the producer and mediator of a collaborative process involving multiple perspectives, conflicting expectations, and contradictory needs. The artists' commitment and the positive working relationships of all participants proved crucial.

And YOU!
The success of an exhibition ultimately depends on the presence and interest of the museum visitor. Your active exploration of NOW brings its planning, artwork, and exhibition to its full public life.
