Michael Asher is one of the premier conceptual artists in the United States. Since the late 1960s, he has created projects that reveal how museums and galleries display art and how institutional practices shape how we understand the art we see in those settings.

His installations have been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries both in the U.S. and abroad, including the Kunstverein Hamburg, the Renaissance Society in Chicago, Centre Georges Pompidou, Musée National d'Art Moderne and ARC in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven in Holland, the Art Institute of Chicago, The Banff Centre in Canada, the Krefeld Kunstmuseum in Germany, the Venice Biennale in Italy, and Documenta 5 and 7 in Kassel, Germany.

His Writings 1973–1983 on Works 1969–1979 was published by The Press of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

He received a Guggenheim Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship.
