The museum asked each of the artists to
design an artwork especially for the Made in California: NOW
exhibition. The artists were asked to think about these issues:
- The artwork should relate to the natural
landscape or cultural environment of California.
- It should be interactive and designed to
interest kids and their families and teachers.
- It could include opportunities for kids to
make things.
- The artist should involve kids in the
planning, fabrication, or testing of the project.
- The artwork should encourage a response from
the public.
- The artist could use LACMA's collection as
inspiration.
- The artwork could encourage visitors to
investigate other areas of the museum.
Activity Ideas
Explore the artworks on this website or in the
gallery, and then try these activities with your students:
Although each of the artists was given the same
goals, the artworks they made were very different. Ask your students
to choose two or three artworks in this exhibition and compare how
the artists met the challenge.
Give your students the Made in
California: NOW challenge: If you were one of the artists
selected for this exhibition, what kind of artwork would you create?
Read about the artists in this packet for inspiration, then design
your own artwork that meets the goals!
