Early twentieth-century postcards of Piazza San Marco
Take another look at Piazza San Marco Looking South and West.
Saint Mark's Square was then, and still is, a favorite tourist destination.
Some of Venice's best-known buildings surround the square, including
the tall bell tower you see on the left and Saint Mark's Basilica,
the corner of which is just visible on the far left edge of the
canvas.
Tourists who visited Venice in the 1700s loved Canaletto's paintings
of the city and bought them as beautifuland expensivesouvenirs
of their travels. When you go on vacation, do you bring back souvenirs?
