This painting does represent a real place, and quite accurately too. In 1871 Moran traveled to Yellowstone with a government survey team. He was especially impressed by the hot springs there, where water rich in minerals created fantastic multicolored rocks and pools. He based this painting on the sketches he made at Yellowstone.

Even today, if you were to stand on the spot where Moran made his sketches, you would see a very similar scene.

What about the distant fog, the rainbow, and the flock of birds? Moran added those just for effect.

COMPARISON Moran was inspired by the spectacular beauty of Yellowstone. Here's an artist who found inspiration in an unlikely place: Moran Calame
