Zhang Roucheng, Traveling
Zhang Image

his image is just a small portion of a very large painting. The whole painting is approximately twenty feet long. It represents a mountainous region in China's Hunan province. Look closely for the many tiny details: boats in the water, a long wall, buildings tucked into the mountains.

These red imprints were made by imperial seals. Zhang, seals details

Seals were made from cast bronze, carved stone or wood, or molded ceramics. They were used as personal identification and appear here as marks of ownership and appreciation. The painting includes six seals of the Qianlong emperor (1736-96). Zhang Roucheng, the artist, was a court painter under Qianlong. It is likely that he was commissioned to do this painting for the emperor.
