Saint

c. 1670
Oil on canvas

Philadelphia, Philadelphia Museum of Art:
St. Sebastian is often represented tied to a column or
a tree, his body pierced with arrows. Here, Giordano represented
instead the following episode of his story. Left wounded but
not dead, Sebastian was tended by Irene. The pious Christian
widow removed the arrows from his body. St. Sebastian was
revered throughout the centuries for protecting cities from the
plague.
