Pompeii and the Roman Villa: Art and Culture around the Bay of Naples
 
Before Mount Vesuvius erupted in the year 79, the region of Campania around the Bay of Naples was a thriving commercial and artistic center. Archaeological excavations have uncovered not only Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other towns near Vesuvius, but also the remains of luxurious seaside villas built by prominent Romans who were drawn to the bay by its beauty and thermal baths—a legacy of its volcanic geology. The bay’s popularity as a resort for vacationing Romans brought enormous wealth to the area . . . .
