Joe Deal

Joe Deal's untitled views of New Mexico housing developments, made with a 2 1/4-inch square format, provide an overall surface pattern of land mixed with haphazardly placed, newly constructed homes. His photographs reflect a deliberate revision of familiar indications of man's hierarchy over the land, without horizon line or the uninterrupted passage of roads. Deal later recalled of his desire to see anew: “It was more of an accident that I was up on a hill and looked down and could see the houses in the context of the landscape rather than just singling out the details of the architecture. I could get more distance and there was a greater feeling of objectivity in doing that.” In addition to his participation as an artist, Joe Deal worked closely with curator William Jenkins to develop New Topographics, designing the catalogue and the exhibition installation.
