Distance Learning
Distance Learning at LACMA
LACMA offers teachers and students the opportunity to experience and explore the museum's collection of over 100,000 works of art through live, interactive videoconferences and webinars. Classes incorporate images, activities, and inquiry-based teaching methods to engage students in lessons that focus on art and history. View a complete list of course offerings.
Most programs can be adapted for any grade or interest level including elementary, middle and high school students, educators, and community groups. Programs are aligned with the national and California content standards.
Videoconferences
Audiences can remotely connect with LACMA via real-time, interactive video conference. Multi-point classroom connections are possible. A facilitator/teacher from your school must be present during the test connection and the program. Schools must be equipped with videoconferencing equipment capable of communicating with an IP-based system at a minimum of 384 Kbs. Schools with ISDN are welcome, but must use their own gateway provider at this time.
Scheduling
Schedule a session by completing the program request form and returning it by email to LACMA. Members of CILC may also browse LACMA courses on the CILC directory (search: LACMA).
Fees
The cost is $100 per one-hour program and includes test connection, a teacher consultation, and curriculum materials. Programs are free for all public schools within Los Angeles County. Schools using ISDN equipment are responsible for paying connection fees associated with placing the video call to LACMA. Cancellations must be received forty-eight hours in advance in order to receive a full refund.
Tips for a successful program
- Please prepare students in advance for the distance learning experience. Ensure that students are comfortable with the classroom set-up and acquainted with the equipment (monitors, camera, microphones, etc.).
- Let students know that their participation is expected as part of the lesson. Classes include content that requires active viewing of artworks, provides new information, and encourages critical thinking and group discussion.
- Classroom teachers should help facilitate the lesson by calling upon students and repeating questions and comments if necessary.
