Talk: Point of View Gallery Talk—Digging Up Ideas: Archaeological Inspiration in English 18th-Century Decorative Arts

12:30 pm | Thu, July 27, 2017
BP Grand Entrance

Join Rosie Mills, The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Associate Curator of Decorative Arts and Design, to explore newly installed English Neoclassical silver and ceramics. The talk will consider the relationship of these displays to those in adjacent galleries devoted to the Grand Tour—an extended period of travel through Continental Europe thought essential to the completion of an aristocratic education. Looking at LACMA’s encyclopedic collection from the perspective of these tourists, we can see how the emerging field of archaeology inspired fashionable living in a rapidly industrializing Britain.
