Casino Royale
Cold, brusque, intense—Daniel Craig’s debut as James Bond made brittle insouciance the epitome of twenty-first-century suavity; it’s the perfect complement for director Martin Campbell’s return to the franchise, and the script—its writers include Oscar-winner Paul Haggis—saluted the character’s onscreen past while propelling into a new direction for Bond. This 2006 film was the third adaptation of the source material and pits Bond against arch villain Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelson) and introduces obsessive love for 007: his hunger for Vesper Lynd. Taking Bond back to his beginnings made this “royale” reboot the biggest box office success of the series.
