Artists Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler, whose film installation Flora and accompanying work Bust open to the public on January 20, appear alongside Stephanie Barron, senior curator of Modern Art, and independent curator Philipp Kaiser. In a free-ranging conversation, the artists will discuss how they discovered the unknown American artist Flora Mayo, with whom the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti had a love affair in Paris in the 1920s. While Giacometti is one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century, Mayo's oeuvre has been destroyed and her biography was previously relegated as a footnote in Giacometti scholarship.

In pursuit of Flora's story, Hubbard / Birchler located her son, David. From hours of conversation with him, exhaustive research and the discovery of letters and photographs, they bring Flora's compelling biography to life through a feminist perspective that interweaves reconstruction, reenactment, and documentary into a hybrid form of storytelling. LACMA's exhibition marks the United States debut presentation of Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler: Flora.

Teresa Hubbard (Irish/American/Swiss) and Alexander Birchler (Swiss), have been working collaboratively in film, photography, and sculpture since 1990. They are based in Austin, Texas and Berlin, Germany. Philipp Kaiser, Swiss-born LA-based independent curator, organized the Swiss Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale, where Flora premiered. Stephanie Barron is LACMA's award-winning senior curator of Modern Art. She was instrumental in the museum's acquisition of nine Giacometti sculptures.
