After an eight-year absence, director Alexander Payne returns to the big screen with his adaptation of the Kaui Hart Hemmings novel of the same name. George Clooney plays newly widowed father Matt King, who has to collect the floating wreckage of his family—both immediate and extended—after his wife is involved in a tragic boating accident. Payne weaves assuredly through pathos and comedy in a paradisiacal setting: Hawaii.
