El puente dorado (The Golden Bridge)

The Qeswachaka hanging bridge of Cuzco is hand-woven every year from local grass. The bridge, which was once part of a network of bridges built in the time of the Inca Empire, is now the only one that survives, and it still unites the left and right banks of the imposing Apurimac River. Each year men and women from various Andean communities gather at the bridge for the rebuilding ceremony using ancestral techniques and traditions. Its reconstruction is much more than a yearly chore; it is a ritual imbued with the devotion, fervor, and sentiments of a community that continues to respect ancient customs and the world around them.
