Moneyball: A Conversation with Academy Award® Nominees Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill
Billy Beane, Academy Award® nominees Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill and film editor Christopher Tellefsen and sound mixer Deb Adair discuss Moneyball, the film based on Beane's career, which received an Oscar nod for Best Picture this year. A screening of the film follows the conversation.
Bennett Miller's adaptation of Michael Lewis's non-fiction best seller Moneyball stars Brad Pitt as Billy Beane, a one-time phenom who flamed out in the big leagues and now works as the general manager for the Oakland A's. For the A's to compete against perennial favorites such as the Yankees and the Red Sox, Beane realizes he needs to radically change how he evaluates what players can bring to the squad. With Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), an Ivy League economics major, Beane comes to understand how to subvert the system of assessing players that has been in place for nearly a century. However, as the duo begins to acquire players that seem too old, injured, or inept to play Major League Baseball, they face stiff resistance from both the A's longtime scouts and the team's manager Art Howe (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who outright refuses to allow Beane's non-traditional acquisitions to play.
