From Russia with Love
President John F. Kennedy selected Ian Fleming’s From Russia with Love as the only novel among his ten favorite books, which, it has been said, was one of the reasons United Artists head and JFK campaign supporter Arthur Krim wanted to see Bond brought to the big screen. The film centers on SPECTRE’s theft of a coding device from the Soviets as a pretext to the organization’s true goal: exacting revenge on James Bond for his killing of its prize asset. The boxing and martial arts sequence between Bond (Connery) and canary-blond assassin Red Grant (Robert Shaw) is one of the most memorable movie fight scenes of the 1960s.
