Manuscript of Phra Malai Tale: Reviewing two tales from the Buddha’s previous life

The Manuscript of Phra Malai Tale in LACMA’s collection depicts the story of Phra Mali, a Buddhist monk who traveled to the Buddhist heavens and hells and shared the messages of the deceased to people on earth. The manuscript also illustrates the Ten Birth Tales (Jatakas) depicting Buddha’s previous lives, through calligraphy and paintings, each story representing a Buddhist virtue.

Focusing on two of these Jatakas (Chandrakumara Jataka and Narada Jataka), the class will create a painting and story of how Jatakas can be re-interpreted today.
