James Cuno: Who Owns Antiquity?
Saturday, May 17 | 2:00 pm

James Cuno, President and Eloise W. Martin Director of the Art Institute of Chicago, has written and lectured extensively on the role of art museums in setting standards for the acquisition of cultural properties. In this lecture, Cuno will examine topics from his recent book Who Owns Antiquity?: Museums and the Battle over Our Ancient Heritage. A strong proponent of the idea that antiquities belong to everyone rather than to specific cultures, Cuno will consider ways both to preserve archaeological sites and share antiquities in order to encourage a greater appreciation and understanding of our common heritage.

After the lecture, Dr. Cuno will sign copies of his books Who Owns Antiquity?: Museums and the Battle over Our Ancient Heritage and Whose Muse?: Art Museums and the Public Trust.

This lecture was made possible by UCLA, the Southern Asian Art Council, the South and Southeast Asian Art Department, and the Education Department at LACMA.

Education programs at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art are supported in part by the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and the William Randolph Hearst Endowment Fund for Arts Education.

Bing Theater | Admission is free; there is no reserved seating.
