Collections Management will be accepting applications for one or two student interns on an ongoing basis, following the university semester system.

Description

Collections Management ensures works of art in storage areas are accessible, housed under proper environmental conditions and are properly protected while in storage. The internship program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to work on projects related to preparation of archival materials for housing artwork, conduct inventories and relocation updates of artwork, and assist in maintaining and monitoring environmental conditions in all permanent collection storerooms. The internship will expose students to multiple facets of collections care and long-term preservation goals.

Eligibility Requirements

The volunteer intern must be able to complete 240 hours within a fourteen-week period, be computer literate, and be a college junior, senior or graduate-level status. This non-compensatory internship is appropriate for students from the following majors: museum studies, art history, anthropology, archaeology, history, library science, or pre-program conservation studies. Academic credit can be arranged. Hours are flexible between 8 am and 6 pm Monday through Friday.

The ideal candidate should have knowledge of basic museum collections management practices, collections care, documentation, information systems, and have the ability to work independently. Preference will be given to students with a serious interest in pursuing a museum career.

Risk Management and Collections Information

The Collections Management and Information department (CMI) is currently accepting applications for volunteer student interns. This internship is offered to 3-4 students on an ongoing basis, following the university quarter-system.

Description

With one of the largest online catalogues of any art museum in the U.S., LACMA is a leader in museum web programming.  The CMI Internship provides students with an overview of the many steps and issues involved in web publishing. Students will participate in digitizing one-of-a-kind museum artifacts, including researching, preparing and editing collection information for release on the website.  Through hands-on projects and discussion in internal meetings, students will become familiar with the following topics:  website design and organization, technical protocols, copyright requirements, tracking public use, audience expectations and evaluation, collaborations with teachers, and grant funding.  Students will deal with new web content relating to the museum's collections, exhibitions and institutional archives.

Grantwriting Department

The Government and Foundation Relations Department is seeking an undergraduate or graduate intern who is actively enrolled in an art history, museum studies, English, liberal arts, or other applicable program for the Fall 2008 semester.

Description

The desired intern will be a proficient writer, have strong analytical skills, and be able to work up to 20 hours per week for college credit. The ideal candidate will be a strong writer, have strong analytical skills, and be proficient with Internet, Excel, and MS Word. He/she must be able to type 50 words per minute and have good organizational skills.

This is a non-paid internship, but school credits will be awarded. Intern duties primarily entail prospect research to identify new funding opportunities and preparing written documents, including letters of inquiry, status reports, grant proposals, and acknowledgment letters. Other responsibilities include filing and fulfilling donor stewardship, such as mailing VIP passes and exhibition catalogues. There may also be the opportunity to assist with special events for the Development Department, such as opening night receptions and private viewings of exhibitions.

The Registrar's Office will be accepting applications for student interns on an ongoing basis, following the university semester system.

Description

The Registrar's Office creates and maintains the official records for all of the objects in the LACMA collections or on loan to the museum.  The internship program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to work on projects related to documenting the permanent collection, inventorying and cataloguing objects, assisting with incoming and outgoing loans, exhibitions, database management, and special projects. The interns will be exposed to all phases of registration and receive additional assignments focusing on archiving and museum ethics.

The volunteer intern must be able to complete 240 hours within a fourteen-week period, be computer literate, and have junior, senior or graduate-level status. This non-compensatory internship is appropriate for students from the following majors: museum studies, art history, art, anthropology, archaeology, history, and library science. Academic credit can be arranged. Hours are flexible between 8 am and 5 pm Monday through Friday.

Development Department

The Development Department is seeking an undergraduate or graduate intern who is actively enrolled in an art history, history, museum studies, English, liberal arts, or other applicable program for Winter 2009.

Hours

20 hours a week, minimum.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

This is a non-paid internship, but school credits can be awarded. Intern will work closely with the Director’s Circle and President’s Circle, major gift programs which raise unrestricted revenue for art acquisitions, educational programming, and museum operations. Duties primarily entail ongoing research projects, such as direct mail and corporate prospecting; researching and updating donor information via the Internet; and cross-checking mailing addresses in Enterprise, the museum’s fundraising database. Other responsibilities include filing, fulfilling donor stewardship internal gift processing, collaborating media for major proposals, and fulfilling upper-level membership benefits such as mailing VIP passes, exhibition catalogues, and other special donor requests. There may also be the opportunity to assist with special events for the Development Department, such as opening-night receptions and private viewings of exhibitions.

Marketing Internships

Communications and Marketing Department

There are one to three internship opportunities available in the Marketing and Communications department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Internship Description

The interns will work closely with all members of the marketing staff to develop and execute marketing strategy. Interns have the opportunity to be exposed to all areas of museum marketing, including print, outdoor, and radio advertising, direct email campaigns, street marketing, event planning, research, and the creative process.

Main Responsibilities

  • Assist with placing print, radio, and TV ads
  • Research potential partners for LACMA (business partners, community partners, affiliate associations, schools, etc.)
  • Organize master files related to advertising campaigns
  • Track billing for advertising
  • Assist with event planning

Qualifications

Candidate must be enrolled in a college or university. Enrollment in art and/or marketing classes is preferred. Must be a flexible team player who is excited to learn how a museum works!

This is a non-paid internship. LACMA can work with the university to provide course credit. Candidate must understand that work tasks may change daily. Candidate must be available for a total of at least 20 hours a week for a 12-week period.

Communications and Marketing Department

Internship Description

Interns work closely with all members of the communications staff to develop and execute the museum’s press strategy. Interns have the opportunity to be exposed to all areas of the museum’s press office, including communications with media, development of press materials, press coverage tracking, event planning, and research.

Main Responsibilities

  • Handle requests from all types of media, including print, online, and broadcast
  • Assist with development and assembly of press kits related to museum’s exhibitions, public programs, special events, and announcements
  • Track museum’s press coverage with clippings and coverage reports
  • Assist with news, editorial, and photography shoots
  • Maintain and organize media database
  • Research prospects for media outreach
