Getty Foundation Multicultural Undergraduate Internship (3)
For the 14th consecutive year, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is offering three paid, full-time, 10-week summer multicultural internships sponsored by The Getty Foundation. Internships are available in the following departments: Costume & Textiles; Collections Management (Archival); and Education. According to the Getty Foundation’s guidelines, these internships are “intended for members of groups under-represented in the professions related to museums and the visual arts, particularly individuals of African American, Asian, Latino-Hispanic, and Pacific Islander descent.”
Requirements
A candidate must: 1) be a currently enrolled undergraduate student and have completed at least one semester of college by June 2008; 2) not graduate before December 2008; and 3) be a resident of or be attending college in Los Angeles County. Students who have already served as Getty interns at LACMA are not eligible.
Stipend
Each intern will receive a stipend of $3,500 for a 10-week period, beginning no sooner than June 2, 2008 and ending no later than August 22, 2008. The stipend reflects gross salary; taxes will be taken out. Interns are subject to LACMA’s hiring and payroll procedures.

How to Apply
Costume & Textiles
The Costume and Textiles Department intern will experience a broad range of curatorial duties associated with the accession and exhibition of historic costume and related material. Major responsibilities will focus on assisting curators in the research of an 18th–19th century European fashion collection in preparation for a major exhibition of the collection.
The intern will conduct costume research utilizing the rich holdings of books, fashion plates, and ephemera in the department’s Doris Stein Research Center for Costume and Textiles, as well as LACMA’s collection of European portrait paintings, prints, and drawings.
The ten-week schedule for the internship will include an introduction to the museum, the Costume and Textiles Department, the Conservation Center, and the Registrar’s Office during the first week. The following 4 to 6 weeks will include a combination of reading assignments, examination of costume-related artwork, and hands-on assessment of historic costume and accessories. Final weeks will include writing exhibition labels and preparing artwork for exhibition.
The intern will work directly with curatorial, conservation, and collection management staff and be supervised by the senior curator and department head of costume and textiles.
A desk, computer, printer, scanner, digital camera, telephone, microscope, and extensive specialized library will be made available to the intern within the Costume and Textiles Department.

Collections Management and Registration
The Archives intern will assist with the museum initiatives to publish information about the art collection and archives to the web. This will include researching historic donors, trustees, exhibitions, and events, and working with web staff and archivist to organize the information on the website. The intern will also enter data, scan photographs and news clippings, help index the collection by subject matter, and promote the website to special interest groups.
Excellent computer skills, good communication skills, students with a serious interest in pursuing a museum career, and an art history, anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, library science, or information management background preferred.

Education
The Education Department intern will experience a broad range of the museum’s education programs for multiple audiences including children and adults. Major responsibilities will focus on assisting educators in the coordination and implementation of an intensive professional development program for teachers, in the planning and installation of an exhibition of student artwork, and with the summer studio art program.
Teachers Academy Partnerships offers opportunities to teams of teachers to explore and study the museum’s permanent collection; sessions feature curatorial walkthroughs, discussion strategies, and artist-led workshops. The annual Student Art Exhibition features artworks created by participants in the museum’s classes and outreach programs. Art Camp and the teen art program offer daily artist-led workshops that include both gallery and studio experiences.
The intern will also have opportunities to assist with other programs, including but not limited to art and art history classes, NexGen Family Sundays, and Evenings for Educators. Dependent upon interest and experience the intern may also assist with focused observations and formal evaluations of programs. Other projects may be developed to support the intern’s areas of interest and expertise.
A thorough introduction to the museum and its operations and to the roles and responsibilities of department staff will be provided. The intern will work directly with selected program staff and be supervised by the Manager of School and Teacher Programs and the Director of Education.

The Collections Management and Information department (CMI) is currently accepting applications for volunteer student interns. This internship is offered to 3-4 students on an ongoing basis, following the university quarter-system.
Description
With one of the largest online catalogues of any art museum in the U.S., LACMA is a leader in museum web programming. The CMI Internship provides students with an overview of the many steps and issues involved in web publishing. Students will participate in digitizing one-of-a-kind museum artifacts, including researching, preparing and editing collection information for release on the website. Through hands-on projects and discussion in internal meetings, students will become familiar with the following topics: website design and organization, technical protocols, copyright requirements, tracking public use, audience expectations and evaluation, collaborations with teachers, and grant funding. Students will deal with new web content relating to the museum's collections, exhibitions and institutional archives.
Eligibility Requirements
The volunteer intern must be able to complete 240 hours over a twelve-week period, be computer literate, and have senior or graduate-level status. This non-compensatory internship is appropriate to students from the following majors: museum studies, library science, information management, or art history.
Preference will be given to those applicants with a serious interest in pursuing a museum career or special computer skills. Academic credit can be arranged. Hours are flexible between 8 am and 6 pm Monday through Friday.

Grantwriting Department
The Government and Foundation Relations Department is seeking an undergraduate or graduate intern who is actively enrolled in an art history, museum studies, English, liberal arts, or other applicable program for the Spring 2008 or Summer 2008 semesters.
Description
The desired intern will be a proficient writer, have strong analytical skills, and be able to work up to 20 hours per week for college credit. The ideal candidate will be a strong writer, have strong analytical skills, and be proficient with Internet, Excel, and MS Word. He/she must be able to type 50 words per minute and have good organizational skills.
This is a non-paid internship, but school credits will be awarded. Intern duties primarily entail prospect research to identify new funding opportunities and preparing written documents, including letters of inquiry, status reports, grant proposals, and acknowledgment letters. Other responsibilities include filing and fulfilling donor stewardship, such as mailing VIP passes and exhibition catalogues. There may also be the opportunity to assist with special events for the Development Department, such as opening night receptions and private viewings of exhibitions.

Internship Description
The intern will work closely with all members of the membership department to develop and execute the membership marketing plan. The intern will have the opportunity to be exposed to all areas of museum membership, including retaining current members, acquiring new members, providing customer service and benefits to current members.
Main Responsibilities

Assist with event planning, including Muse events and new member parties

Qualifications

This is a non-paid internship. LACMA can work with the university to provide course credit. Candidate must understand that work tasks may change daily. Candidate must be available for a total of at least 20 hours a week for a 12-week period.

The Registrar's Office will be accepting applications for two student interns on an ongoing basis, following the university semester system.
Description
The Registrar's Office creates and maintains the official records for all of the objects in the LACMA collections or on loan to the museum. The internship program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to work on projects related to documenting the permanent collection, inventorying and cataloguing objects, and assisting with incoming and outgoing loans for acquisition and exhibition programs. The interns will be exposed to all phases of registration and receive additional assignments focusing on archiving and museum ethics.
Eligibility Requirements
The volunteer intern must be able to complete 240 hours within a fourteen-week period, be computer literate, and have junior, senior or graduate-level status. This non-compensatory internship is appropriate for students from the following majors: museum studies, art history, art, anthropology, archaeology, history, and library science. The Development Department is currently seeking an undergraduate or graduate intern who is presently enrolled in an Art History, Museum Studies, Liberal Arts, Business Administration or other applicable course of study.
Description
The internship will provide hands-on experience in the busy development office of a leading Los Angeles arts institution. The intern will work closely with the Corporate Development team supporting active donor solicitation and cultivation activities. Responsibilities include prospect research, preparing solicitation packages, gift processing and filing, membership/sponsorship fulfillment, and assisting with special donor requests. There may also be opportunities to assist with organizing and staffing special events, such as opening night receptions and exhibition tours.
The ideal candidate will have strong writing and organizational skills and an attention to detail, and be highly motivated. Intern must be proficient with Internet, Excel, MS Word, and be able to type 50 words per minute. Preference will be given to those applicants with a serious interest in pursuing a museum and/or development career. This is a non-paid internship, but school credits will be awarded.
