Associate Vice President of Campaign and Major Gifts
Development Department (RFT)

Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice President of Development, the Associate Vice President of Campaign and Major Gifts will serve as Campaign Manager for LACMA's Transformation Capital Campaign as well as manage the Directors of Major Donor Groups and Major Donor Special Events to develop strategies and improve tactics for donor solicitations, stewardship and cultivation. Works directly with the Vice President of Development to guide the solicitation of gifts for the capital campaign as well as securing annual major gift support for the museum.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Monitors and organizes all aspects of the Capital and Endowment Campaign, including tracking prospects, preparing meeting agendas and minutes, tracking timelines and deadlines, and updating campaign reports, among other duties.
  • Develops strategies for prospect solicitations; creates proposals and works with solicitors to ensure effective cultivation and solicitation of six- and seven-figure gifts.
  • In weekly group and one-on-one meetings with Development professional staff responsible for major donor groups, including Director's Circle, President's Circle, Collectors Council, the Director of Council Activities, including the 11 volunteer councils, develops and/or approves strategies for donor cultivation and solicitation.
  • Maintains a portfolio of prospects: identifies, cultivates, solicits, and tracks gifts to the campaign as well as raising annual major donor support for the museum.
  • Develops and tracks the campaign budget and revenue projections.  Manages required expenditures within approved budget.
  • Oversees implementation of donor recognition efforts for both campaign and annual support.
  • Full supervisory responsibility for employees within the job classifications of Major Gifts, Campaign, Director's and President's Circles, Major Donor Events, and Council Activities, as well as support staff.

Effective communication of LACMA's vision and the museum's impact on the community is essential. Superior interpersonal and organizational skills, verbal and written presentation abilities, diplomacy, and strategic thinking are required. Establishing a strong rapport with donors and community leaders of varying ages, work experience, educational accomplishments, and cultural, social and financial backgrounds is essential.

  • Bachelor's Degree from a recognized college or university.
  • Eight to ten years of demonstrated, successful fundraising  experience.  
  • Experience and involvement in fundraising efforts for six- and seven-figure gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Capital and endowment campaign experience a plus.
  • Strong, effective, and demonstrable written and oral communication, relationship-building and presentation skills.
  • Must be highly organized, self-motivated and result-oriented, as well as a "team player" who can work well with staff and trustees and interact tactfully with donors.
  • Ability and willingness to prioritize and organize multiple activities.
  • Ability and willingness to recognize and manage complex issues creatively and effectively.
  • Ability and willingness to develop and implement short- and long-range goals and strategic plans.

Curator, Department Head, Chinese and Korean Art
Chinese and Korean Art Department (RFT)

The Chinese and Korean Art Department seeks a highly qualified museum professional to serve as the Curator of Chinese Art and Department Head. The candidate should be an experienced scholar of Chinese art who can work collegially and collaboratively with the Director and Deputy Director and other sections within the institution, especially Education, Conservation, Development, and other curatorial departments.

The Chinese and Korean Department currently houses over 1,800 works of art. The Chinese collection is comprehensive, consisting of 1,400 works, illustrating most artistic developments across a time span of nearly 5,000 years. Notable strengths are archaic bronzes, ceramics and lacquers.

The Chinese and Korean Art Curator/Department Head's primary duties will be to function as the lead institutional specialist for the Chinese Art collection; independently research, catalogue, and publish the permanent collection; be responsible for both LACMA-organized and touring exhibitions from other institutions; actively pursue acquisitions; provide educational lectures and docent training; assist in fundraising and grant writing for acquisitions, exhibitions, and a capital campaign; cultivate and maintain donor, trustee and community relations and professional affiliations; and collaborate with the East Asian Art Council, the department's support group.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in art history and a minimum of seven to ten years related experience, or an equivalent combination. Appropriate language skills and previous supervisory experience are also mandatory. In addition, the position requires advanced English-language communication and interpersonal skills; aptitude for connoisseurship; critical scholarly record and ambition; contribution to the intellectual life of the museum; thoughtful initiative and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively; and the demonstrated capability to write for a general as well as a scholarly audience.

Assistant/Associate Curator of Chinese Art
Chinese and Korean Art Department (RFT)

The Chinese and Korean Art Department seeks a highly qualified professional with museum experience to serve as an assistant or associate curator of Chinese Art. This position offers an opportunity to work with the most comprehensive collection of Chinese art in the Western Hemisphere and in one of the most active departments in the field. The person selected must be a team player, able to work closely with the Curator of the department and other sections within the institution, especially Education, Docents, Conservation, Registrars, Development, and other curatorial departments.  The assistant or associate curator’s primary duties will be to: function as the lead institutional specialist for the Chinese art collection; independently research, interpret (writing/composing labels, didactics, gallery guides, electronic media and museum website), catalogue, and publish the permanent collection; participate in acquisitions and exhibitions/installations; provide educational lectures, information, and docent training; instruct and supervise departmental interns and volunteers; provide public and scholarly art expertise, both written and oral; assist in fundraising and grant-writing for acquisitions, exhibitions, and a capital campaign; cultivate and maintain donor/trustee/community relations and professional affiliations; and collaborate with the East Asian Art Council, the department’s support group. 

Qualifications

Ph.D. strongly preferred, but will consider ABD or MA in East Asian art history if accompanied by a minimum of three years of museum experience working with Chinese art. Prior museum and/or related experience will determine the level of the position. Requires proficiency in Chinese and at least one other East Asian language; advanced English-language communication and interpersonal skills; aptitude for connoisseurship; critical scholarly record and ambition; contribution to the intellectual life of the museum; thoughtful initiative and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively; and the demonstrated capability to write for a general as well as a scholarly audience. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is currently planning an unprecedented expansion and restructuring of its permanent collection galleries, and the immediate future promises to be a remarkable opportunity for a high-energy, dedicated individual.

Major Gifts Officer, President's Circle                     
Development Department (RFT)

Reporting to the Director of Major Gifts, the Major Gifts Officer will create and manage a $2.5 million-plus annual campaign for LACMA’s President’s Circle and work with the Development staff to identify, cultivate, and solicit major gifts for Transformation: The LACMA Campaign.

Duties include correspondence with major donors, solicitation of gift donations, the design and production of events for the President’s Circle, supervision of President’s Circle subcommittee made up of Trustees and community leaders, and the management and cultivation of prospective donor relationships.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree and three to five years of experience in working with donors, creating direct mail solicitations, catering to high level member needs, and budget creation and management. A combination of related education, training, and experience will be accepted.

Additional requirements are as follows: demonstrated strength in organizing, prioritizing and handling multiple tasks to meet established deadlines in spite of frequent interruptions; ability to respond quickly and accurately to changing tasks and priorities; analytical, detail-oriented, flexible and efficient work style; ability to exercise sound judgment and decision making and handle confidential and sensitive information effectively; ability to exercise appropriate initiative and follow-through on a daily basis; solid working knowledge of computers and word-processing, spreadsheet, database, and/or other software applications currently used by the department; strong service orientation; ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.

Corporate Sponsorship Officer                    
Development Department (RFT)

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Corporate Sponsorships & Marketing, the Corporate Sponsorship Officer is directly responsible for securing project, general operating, capital, and endowment support from corporations, and works to ensure effective cultivation and stewardship of corporate sponsors.

Some duties include: development of sponsorship solicitation strategies, negotiation of sponsorship contracts, coordination of all aspects of sponsorship fulfillment from initiation to completion including the delivery of marketing, public relations, entertainment, and hospitality benefits, indentifying corporate funding opportunities across the museum with frequent collaboration between various departments, analyzing financial progress and preparing annual revenue and expense budgets.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree and at least three to five years of related experience and/or training; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. Excellent writing ability, highly developed organizational skills, attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-based environment is required. Strong working knowledge of MSWord, Excel and databases plus previous experience in a not-for-profit development setting preferred.

Facilities Assistant (2)                  
Facilities Services Department (RFT)

Reporting to the Facilities Supervisor, the Facilities Assistant is responsible for the set-up of small- to medium-sized events, and will interact with various Museum departments and employees at all levels. The Facilities Assistant will also have contact with the public, donors, and trustees and must provide a high level of customer service while working in a demanding and deadline-driven environment.

Some duties include: transportation and maintenance of museum-owned equipment; assistance with the organization, movement, and storage of material in the Museum’s non-art warehouse; implementation of work orders and plans for special event set-ups; assistance with staff office moves, furniture delivery, file moves, and other office-related requests.

The ideal candidate will have a high school education and two years of related experience or training; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. Scheduling flexibility is critical, must be able to work evenings and weekends. May drive automotive vehicles and operate other equipment, including forklifts, personnel lifts, scissors lifts, pallet jacks, and carts in performance of duties. The ideal candidate must be able to exercise sound judgment and decision-making skills, and handle confidential and sensitive information effectively, with minimal supervision. Previous experience providing work direction is preferred.

Gallery Facilitator                  
Education Department (TPT)

Reporting to the Manager of Art Classes & Family Programs, the Gallery Facilitator welcomes and engages with visitors of all ages to the Boone Children’s Gallery at LACMA. Working closely with the public, Gallery Facilitators monitor the art studio as well as the gallery installations. They assist in preparing and maintaining the inventory of art-studio materials, wash paint brushes, set up supplies, tables, and benches. In addition, they work closely with other Gallery Facilitators to contribute to an enjoyable experience for all of the Boone Children’s Gallery visitors.

The ideal candidate will have interest and experience in studio arts, the creative process, and working with both children and adults. In addition, s/he will have completed course work in child development, education, art history, or other related fields. The selected candidate will need to be positive, flexible, innovative, organized, calm under pressure, and patient.

Candidate must be available to work weekdays, weekends, and holidays, and able to stand for 3–6 hours, lift 15 pounds, and push a utility cart.

This is a temporary part-time position scheduled for up to 20 hours per week through November 2008.

Collections Management Supervisor                  
Conservation Department (RFT)

Reporting to the Director of Conservation, the Collections Management Supervisor is responsible for the proper care and management of the collection storage areas at the museum and will also be involved in planning and managing the relocation of selected collection storage areas as part of the museum’s multi-year, capital building campaign.

Duties include: oversee packing, inventory, labeling, and movement of artwork within collection storage areas; oversee installation of storage equipment and physical renovation of storerooms; update databases and write and prepare system reports; source and procure storage materials; develop and manage budgets associated with collections management; assist in physical movement of art.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in museum studies or in a related field of study such as art history, archaeology or anthropology, conservation, or information management. The ideal candidate will also have a minimum of four years experience in handling museum objects, developing and retrofitting museum storerooms, coordinating large-scale multi-year projects involving multiple departments, and supervising staff. A combination of related training, experience and education will be accepted.

Collections Management Technician                 
Conservation Department (RFT)

Reporting to the Director of Conservation, the Collections Management Technician is responsible for the routine care and maintenance of collection storage areas including handling, tracking and relocation of artwork.

Duties include: houses and re-houses artwork in storage; fabricates support systems and protective enclosures for artwork in storage; handles and tracks the relocation of individual objects or collections; performs routine tasks related to collection storage areas, including but not limited to environmental monitoring, integrated pest management, seismic mitigation, disaster planning; orders program equipment and supplies; performs special projects as assigned.

The ideal candidate will have two to four years of experience involving museum collection management, art preparation, handling and installation, museum registration, conservation or carpentry.

Editorial Assistant                
Publications Department (RFT)

Reporting to the Co-Directors of Publications, the Editorial Assistant provides administrative support to the Publications department staff and is responsible for the tracking and maintaining of the production schedule and workflow of exhibition materials among editors, designers, curators, and educators.

Duties include: generating contracts and payments for outside parties such as authors, editors, co-publishers, printers, and customs agents; preparing travel requests and reconciling expenses; monitoring and processing royalty payments; organizing distribution of exhibition catalogues in-house and externally; maintaining inventory of existing catalogues; and general troubleshooting. In addition to these primary duties, there is also potential to gain editorial experience by assisting senior editors in a variety of entry-level editorial tasks, including proofreading, fact-checking, and some copyediting.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent amount of professional experience. The qualified candidate will also have excellent interpersonal, administrative, organizational, and language skills.
