Rice Planting

The replanting of rice seedlings in Japan took place in the fifth lunar month (approximately June in the solar calendar) and was considered to be one of the annual events by which the Japanese marked the passing of seasons. Traditional songs were sung during replanting and, although the work was back-breaking, it was an opportunity for everyone in the village to come together on a communal project. A festive atmosphere resulted, and this sense of community is reflected on nostalgically by artists. The subject of rice planting appeared in paintings, prints, and clothing designs, and on lacquers. Because, through the planting of rice, farmers supplied food to all classes of society, they were highly regarded by the governing class.
