PAINTING: About the Artist

Nakabayashi Chikuto

Nakabayashi Chikuto (1776-1853), a conservative literati painter, was widely published and respected as an art theorist as well. He believed the proper study of painting began with copying Chinese models to gain the technical discipline necessary for the development of an individual style. The son of a Nagoya doctor, Chikuto grew up in a family accustomed to art patronage and to the society of artists. His mentor, Kamiya Tenyu, a wealthy Nagoya merchant and collector, started Chikuto and his close friend, the painter Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856), on a lifelong study of Chinese painting. In 1802, Chikuto moved to Kyoto, there joining the circle of the influential Confucian scholar, calligrapher, painter, and poet Rai Sanyo (1780-1832). From that time on, Chikuto became increasingly influential, both for his quiet painting style and for his exacting theories on painting.
