Handscrolls like this one could be rolled up and stored in boxes. When the owner wanted to look at this kind of scroll with friends, he would unroll it a little at a time on a table or desk, starting at the right end of the scroll (handscrolls are meant to be viewed from right to left). They would look at one scene before unrolling the next section.
