Children's art classes emphasize creative problem-solving and experimentation with a variety of media. In addition to art-making, classes include gallery activities and the viewing of original works of art from the museum's permanent collection or special exhibitions. Enrollment for each class is limited; registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

  Intergenerational Classes

Children Ages 3 1/2 to 5 and Their Family Members
These sessions offer very young children and their parents a variety of experiences, including storytelling, observation activities, and art-making workshops. 

boxlet Family Portrait
Young artists will explore LACMA's permanent collection for the inspiration of ancient and modern family portraits. Work with artist Quan Yen Trang to create your own family portraits using a variety of media such as paint, ink, and clay to share with future generations.

boxlet Color Time
Young artists and their family members will discover the amazing power of color through playful art talks in the museum’s galleries and family art projects in the studio with artist Kady Hoffman.

Children Ages 6 to 9
Inspired by the museum’s incredible collection, students discover their own creativity and problem-solving skills to produce original works of art.

boxlet Redefining Art (Experiments with Shape, Color and Form)
Explore the newly re-installed collection of modern art and the contemporary art featured in the new BCAM building. Through various gallery and studio activities, we will create works of art responding to our world and the artwork we will be exploring. With artist Shannon Green.

boxlet Modern Art and Beyond
Explore the innovative and experimental ideas that excited the modern artists and artists of today. Paint, sculpt, and create your own works with artist June Edmonds.

Children Ages 10 to 13
Participants study art objects in the galleries while working in a variety of expressive media. The classes emphasize creative problem-solving, observation, skills, and art-making techniques.

boxlet Remixing Art
Explore the Broad Contemporary Art Collection and examine work that addresses the creation of narratives concerning places we are familiar with and people we can identify with. Young artists will work with artist Cindy Santos Bravo to create collage mixed with various media including pencil, ink, paint, found objects, and photographs.

boxlet Chicano Art
Check out works created by Chicano artists—from paintings and sculpture to video and installation art—to explore ideas of identity and social awareness, and create your own 2D and 3D media with artist Irene Prestinari.

Intergenerational Classes
Perfect for families or adults on their own, intergenerational classes present to students of nearly all ages the opportunity to learn about art and make art at the museum together.

boxlet Girls Rule
Learn about ancient goddesses and modern masters while exploring the museum for artworks made by or about women or girls. In the studio, work collaboratively with your family to make your own masterpieces using a variety of materials with artist Rosanne Kleinerman.
