Teen art classes, designed especially for this age group, present fundamental approaches to art. Students learn a variety of techniques and develop their own styles.
Weekend Classes
Sketchbook
Provided with a sketchbook, charcoal, pencils, and colored pastels, students draw from observation using the museum's galleries and grounds for inspiration. Teens use the sketchbook to develop their own visual language based on the museum's collection, with guidance from artist Earnest Merritt.

From 2-D to 3-D and Back
Working in the permanent collection galleries as well as the studio, students will explore the relationship between line, shape, texture, and volume. Two-dimensional graphite sketches drawn in the galleries will be transformed into three-dimensional mixed media artworks in the studio. The experiment continues as students then transform their three-dimensional work back into unique two-dimensional mixed-media works of art with artist May Jong.

Month-long Workshop
Art School Ready: Building Your Art Portfolio
This four-week intensive class with artist Michael Wright focuses on figure drawing from nude models, color theory, and self-portraits, to create a comprehensive portfolio geared for art school applications.

Week-long Workshops
Street Photography–Teen Projects
In conjunction with the exhibition Philip-Lorca diCorcia, experiment with street photography. Discussions led by artists and critics, as well as hands-on photo shoots. The students' work will culminate in a presentation of their own photographs.

Large Scale Mixed Media Drawing
Students: get ready to work large! Create really big mixed media drawings by combining on-site sketches with other art media. Investigate the dynamic contemporary works housed in the new BCAM building and LACMA’s permanent collection to be inspired by centuries of visual movements, techniques, and ideas.

Water Soluble Oil Painting
Water soluble oils clean with soap and water and handle like traditional oil paints. This class is designed to introduce basic oil painting techniques and color theory without the use of solvent or harmful chemicals.

Silkscreen
Learn basic design elements, silkscreen techniques, and how to hand-cut stencils. Pull your own prints on paper and graphic T-shirts.
