Artistic Heritage: Exploring Latin American and Chicano Art
September 16
In what ways can the artistic heritage of Latin America inspire or inform modern and contemporary artworks? What shared forms and subjects are found in works by Latin American and Chicano artists? Consider the personal, social, and cultural histories reflected in works by artists such as Frida Kahlo, Rufino Tamayo, and Carlos Almaraz. LACMA's collection of Latin American art and artworks from Los Angelenos/Chicano Painters of L.A.: Selections from the Cheech Marin Collection will be highlighted.
Creating Collections, Preserving Culture
November 18
Who collects works of art? What are the components of an art collection? How can art inform an understanding of our time and previous eras? Consider these and other questions about the role of artworks in preserving culture through an exploration of paintings, sculptures, and other objects from LACMA's permanent collection. Artworks from the exhibitions Hearst the Collector and Francis Alÿs: Fabiola will also be highlighted.
What Makes Modern Art Modern?
February 10
What makes a work of art modern? In what ways do modern artists break with established art-making traditions? Explore paintings, sculptures, photographs, and works on paper from LACMA's permanent collection and consider the subjects, concepts, and formal qualities that characterize modern art.
