School Tour FAQ

Does the museum offer free transportation?
LACMA offers one free passenger bus to title 1 LAUSD schools with a group size of 40–60 students requesting to come on a docent-guided tour. Buses are offered on a first come, first served basis as funds are limited. To request a bus send a letter on school letterhead indicating your school's title 1 status along with your request form. Free buses are also available through the City of Los Angeles Charter Bus Program. For more information please visit www.ladottransit.com and search for Charter Bus Program.

Can my class stay in the museum after the tour?
Classes may stay in the museum after their visit on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays when the museum opens to the public at noon. The museum is closed to the public on Wednesdays. Classes that remain at the museum after their guided visit can pick up their tickets from the box office on the BP Grand Entrance or on the LA Times Central Court and may come and go freely for the rest of that day. Classes may not enter the museum before their designated tour start time.

Where can I eat my lunch?
Unfortunately, the Museum does not have lunchroom facilities for students. Classes may eat in the BP Grand Entrance, the LA Times Central Court or in the park. Although students may purchase food from the café, seating is not permitted.

Where do I check in?
Please check in with the security guard at the BP Grand Entrance off Wilshire Blvd and Ogden Ave. A docent will meet your group when it arrives.

How many students can fit in a group?
Most tours can take up to 120 students; others have special size limitations. Please click here for more information on the tours.

How many chaperones should I bring?
The museum requires one chaperone per every ten students. Classes may not bring more than one chaperone for every five students.

What should my students bring?
Students do not need to bring anything as LACMA docents will provide all necessary supplies. Students' belongings should be left on the bus, or they will be checked upon arrival. Please avoid bringing any valuable items to the Museum.

What happens if I am late?
If your groups arrive late, your program will be shortened accordingly, finishing at the originally designated time. Groups more than thirty minutes late will be canceled and may enter the museum during public hours (12 pm on weekdays) for a self-guided visit.

What if I need to cancel my tour?
The museum strongly encourages teachers to avoid canceling tours. However, in the event of cancellation, please contact schooltours@lacma.org or call 323 857-6109 as soon as possible. Please note that a school tour will only be rescheduled once.

What can I do to prepare my class for their visit to the Museum?
Teachers should check out our online pre-visit guides that can be taught in the classroom. Teachers should always review the museum rules with students before their visit.

What if I want more information about my tour?
You can contact schooltours@lacma.org or call 323 857-6108 at any time. Please note that phone messages may take up to 48 hours to return.
