Series: The Surreal Screen

In the lead-up to the opening of the exhibition Drawing Surrealism, LACMA will present screenings that explore different ways in which filmmakers intersect with surrealist practices. Animating the Subconscious explores the rich legacy of cartoons that delve into the realm of dreams and visions, Collage in Motion presents moving-image works that draw on found and scavenged materials to create kinetic, associative cinema, and Spotlight on Lewis Klahr offers a look at a contemporary, internationally renowned, and Los Angeles–based filmmaker who employs these same techniques to indelible effect, most recently in his debut feature, the noir-tinged The Pettifogger.
Programmed by Bernardo Rondeau, Assistant Curator, Film Programs.
Special support provided by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
