Art+Film

Film is perhaps the most dominant art form of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. LACMA’s Art+Film Initiative presents the moving image in the context of an art museum through exhibitions, film programs, and educational outreach initiatives. The Art+Film initiative places film in dialogue with the art of all times and cultures, and also brings contemporary filmmakers and film techniques to the museum and its community. Learn more.

Frame x Frame: Reimagining the Everyday is a tour and digital animation workshop for seventh grade students. Teaching Artists lead students on a tour of the collection, analyzing how artists have transformed ordinary objects in unexpected ways. Following the tour, students visit the studio where they re-imagine everyday items by combining the traditional art of drawing with technology. Learn more.

The Art+Film Teacher Institute fosters interdisciplinary connections between visual art, media literacy, and the core curriculum. Using LACMA’s galleries as inspiration, school teams work together to create a short film inspired by a work of art. The production process explores the parallels between reading, writing, and filmmaking, emphasizing independent and collaborative art-making. Program activities and materials address California State Content Standards for the Visual and Performing Arts, LAUSD Media Arts Standards, and California Common Core Standards for English/Language Arts. The Art + Film Institute is made possible by The Rose Hills Foundation. Learn more.
