The Robert Gore Rifkind Center for German Expressionist Studies

The Robert Gore Rifkind Center for German Expressionist Studies is a research facility devoted to the study of the Expressionist movement that flourished in Germany during the early twentieth century. 

The Center houses a collection of approximately 6,000 prints and drawings and a catalogued library of over 10,000 volumes. The Center is committed to an extensive exhibitions program that includes a continuous program of rotating exhibitions as well as larger touring exhibitions accompanied by publications. This collection is available by appointment to art historians, scholars, and students.

Scholar-in-Residence

The Robert Gore Rifkind Foundation supports a Scholar-in-Residence program allowing specialists from universities and museums from the United States and abroad to conduct research in the Study Center, generally for a period of one to four weeks. Airfare, accommodations, and per diem expenses in Los Angeles are paid under this program.

Application may be made by letter or email, accompanied by a brief description of your research project, copy of your c.v., and preferred starting date. There is no deadline but applications should be sent several months in advance of the proposed residency.

It is best to propose a project that makes specific use of the resources we have, which can be perused using our published and online resources. Artworks in the Rifkind Center can be found in LACMA’s collection online. Our library holdings can be searched using the WorldCat portal on LACMA’s Libraries and Research page.
