Illinois-born performer Loïe Fuller was a pioneer of modern dance and an innovator in the use of colored lights in dance performances. Her achievements crossed the thresholds of art, science, and technology, and she owned several patents for her discoveries. Many versions of Fuller’s Serpentine Dance were recorded on film; in some of these, hand coloring recreates the chromatic lighting effects of her stage shows (see film clips on this wall). In other media as well—ceramics, lithography, photography, and so on—artists depicted Fuller emulating the sinuous shapes she created with swirling drapery.
