Henri Matisse was famously a fan of jazz, and his studio was often filled with music floating from the phonograph or radio. He would likely have especially cherished the solace provided by music in 1941, a period during which France was occupied by the Nazis and he was recovering from a debilitating surgery for cancer. In that same year across the ocean, American composer Harold Arlen penned the song “This Time the Dream’s On Me.” Matisse could easily have sketched Woman Resting to the contours of such a sonic daydream. It’s fitting that Matisse was later commissioned to draw the cover illustration for Ella Fitzgerald’s 1961 album of Harold Arlen compositions, which included her rendition of the song.
