From These Roots – William Greaves

James Van Der Zee documented the daily lives of African Americans in Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s.

His photographs were used to create a documentary about the Harlem Renaissance, From These Roots (1974), directed by acclaimed African American filmmaker William Greaves.
