An Indigenous man rockets across Diego Romero’s Theater of War in this farcical response to President Donald Trump’s 2017 flirtation with a massive attack on North Korea. Romero, a self-proclaimed “chronicler of the absurdities of human nature,” draws on wide-ranging cultural references, from global pottery traditions to popular films and comic books. His precise, geometric imagery is a tribute to the centuries-old pottery of the Cochiti artist’s Mimbres ancestors. Romero is also inspired by Ancient Greek vessels, whose stylized portrayals of epic narratives resonate with his own passion for superhero comics.
