Boone Children's Gallery
Through July 26, 2015: Square Word Calligraphy Classroom in the Boone Children's Gallery
Pick up a brush and practice a style of calligraphy invented by contemporary Chinese artist Xu Bing, whose work is currently on view in the exhibition The Language of Xu Bing. As participants write in the tracing books, they'll notice that the words, written in the style of Chinese calligraphy, are actually English. Visitors are encouraged to imitate the brushstrokes to create their own square words.
Located next to the Korean and Chinese galleries, the Boone Children’s Gallery is a free creative space where visitors of all ages are invited to learn the art of East Asian brush painting. No prior art-making experience is necessary. Friendly and helpful staff introduce painting techniques, offer tips, and even provide high chairs for very young artists. Visitors sit at communal tables in this fun, family-friendly, and resourceful place to relax, create, and make new friends.
