Chase Hall, Dhyandra Lawson, and Michael Govan in Conversation
- Date:
- Time: 5 PM – 6 PM
- Location: W.M. Keck Plaza
- Price: Free, RSVP required
Join artist Chase Hall for a conversation inspired by his exploration of LACMA’s Blackburn Collection of Oceanic Photography. Comprising 9,700 rare objects and photographs made between 1840 and 2016 across 10 Pacific Island nations, the collection offers a rich record of beach life, tourism, land ownership, and European conquest in the Pacific. An artist, surfer, and collector of American vernacular photography, Hall focused his research on the archive’s images of surfing, oceans, and landscapes, leading him to make unexpected connections across histories and cultures.
In conversation with associate curator Dhyandra Lawson and LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director Michael Govan, Hall will use surfing as a point of departure for exploring African American and Indigenous American histories and reflect on how vernacular photographs can expand interpretations and perspectives about the past.
This program is part of Third Weekends at LACMA, a monthly line-up of free and ticketed programs inspired by our collection and special exhibitions.
