As bassist for Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins, Melissa Auf der Maur toured the world in the 1990s with a camera always in hand, requesting a roll of 35mm film backstage at every venue. The result is an archive of over 10,000 photographs—candid moments with Pavement, Sonic Youth, Drew Barrymore, and more—now collected in her book My '90s Rock Photographs, featuring over 200 images. Gritty, playful, and deeply personal, her work captures the independent spirit of the decade before smartphones, offering a time capsule for a generation.
Hear from Auf der Maur and Shirley Manson, lead vocalist of Garbage, in this conversation about the book, Auf der Maur’s years on the road with two of the decade's defining bands, and what it meant to document rock history through her own lens. Copies of the book will also be available to purchase.
This program is part of Third Weekends at LACMA, a monthly line-up of free and ticketed programs inspired by our collection and special exhibitions.
