Film Screening: The Toll of the Sea

Learn about the 1922 silent film The Toll of the Sea at a screening featuring live piano accompaniment by Cliff Retallick, presented alongside the exhibition Fashioning Chinese Women. Vibrant costuming plays a significant role in this film starring Anna May Wong, an adaptation of Madame Butterfly that is one of the earliest surviving US features to use the two-color Technicolor process.

The program begins at 7:30 pm with UCLA Film & Television Archive's head of preservation Jillian Borders providing insight into the restoration process of this piece of film history. Beforehand, visitors are also encouraged to see the exhibition Fashioning Chinese Women, which closes at 7 pm (museum admission is required).

The theme for this season's film programs is inspired by the inaugural display of the new David Geffen Galleries, which explores networks of exchange around oceans and seas, creating connections across time and geography.
