About the book:
The first collaboration between Angel City Press and LACMA, this landmark book examines the significance of the Brockman Gallery through the impact of its exhibitions and considers its role in cultivating Los Angeles as a site of artistic invention and experimentation.

The Brockman Gallery: Los Angeles, 1967–1990 is the first publication devoted to the Brockman Gallery, founded in South Los Angeles by brothers Alonzo and Dale Brockman Davis in the wake of the Watts Rebellion. The artist-run space became vital for emerging artists of color, nurturing the early careers of David Hammons, Suzanne Jackson, and Carrie Mae Weems, among others. The book features rich archival material, illustrating more than seventy works of art by forty-four artists, alongside exhibition posters, invitations, and event documentation. Three essays by prominent curators and art historians address the history of the gallery’s community-driven project, its wide-reaching reverberations, and its legacy. Individual biographies connect the artists to the Davises and their gallery, highlighting moments of creative exchange.

This richly illustrated book accompanies an exhibition of the same name at LACMA, on view October 18, 2026 to January 24, 2027.
