Adrian: The Couture Years, 1942-52
Adrian: The Couture Years, 1942-52
Highlighting one of the most inspired talents of Hollywood’s golden years, the exhibition focused on the couture fashion that followed Gilbert Adrian’s years of costume designing for MGM. Known for his work on such lendardary films as The Wizard of Oz and Marie Antoinette, Adrian is equally famous for the couture designs that accorded him the fashion industry’s highest honor, the Coty award, in 1945. Included in the exhibition were approximately forty pieces from Adrian’s couture collections dated from 1942 to 1952. Many of Adrian’s early evening dresses shared the romantic splendor that characterized the period costumes from his greatest film designs. During the decade covered in this exhibition, Adrian surmounted the challenge of government restrictions on yardage limitations during World War II by developing intricate construction techniques, employing an artful blend of seaming, piecing, and fabric manipulation to create a style unmistakably his own, with streamlined broad shoulders, and tapered waistlines.
