Collections Management Internship, Generalist (Temporary, Part-Time)
Collections Management

SUMMARY

Reporting to the Assistant Collections Manager, the Collections Management Intern will learn about the day-to-day tasks performed by collections management staff and gain a greater knowledge of and hands-on experience working with all object types. The internship is at an offsite facility in Los Angeles County (not on LACMA’s main campus).

LACMA’s encyclopedic collection includes over 154,000 artworks of all material types from all over the world and from all timespans. The collections management department is responsible for the preservation, storage, and organization of the art collection, and plays a critical role in providing access to the collection for LACMA staff and visiting scholars.

This is a 13-week paid internship, approximately 14 hours per week at $17.87/hour.
Anticipated Start Date: May 15, 2026

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Shadows Collections Management staff to gain hands-on experience in best practices for preservation and collections care

  • Assists with housing museum objects for storage and transit in accordance with institutional standards

  • Supports the monitoring and maintenance of collection storerooms

  • Learns and contributes to the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program

  • Tracks and updates object records in the collections management database (TMS) and work request system

  • Supports large-scale acquisition rehousing projects, including chemical labeling of artworks and data entry in TMS 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Internship applicants must be currently enrolled in an academic program, or recently graduated within 1 year.

  • Completed coursework in Museum Studies, Collections Management, Art History, Conservation Science, Studio Art, Art Education, Library Science, Anthropology, or History is preferred.

SUMMARY

Reporting to the Associate Collections Manager, the Collections Management Intern will be provided with the opportunity to learn about the long-term preservation, handling, organization, and tracking of works of art on paper. The intern will gain considerable experience with art handling, and familiarity with museum best practices for works on paper storage, and organization. The intern will learn to conduct basic queries, and record artwork information using TMS, LACMA’s collections management system. The internship is at an offsite facility in Los Angeles County (not on LACMA’s main campus).

LACMA’s encyclopedic works on paper collection includes artworks from around the world totaling roughly 86,000 items. Virtually all types of works on paper are represented, including photographs, prints, drawings, manuscripts, posters, ephemera, books, and collage. The collections management department is responsible for the preservation, storage, and organization of the art collection, and plays a critical role in providing access to the collection for LACMA staff and visiting scholars.

Volunteering is a unique form of philanthropy: a gift of unrestricted time and expertise to the museum. Volunteering provides a means for members to bond over shared artistic passions, and participate in group tours, lectures, receptions and travel. There are a number of ways to give of your time to help LACMA. 

Museum Service Council

The Museum Service Council volunteers greet museum visitors on the LACMA campus, support LACMA's important visitor survey program, assist with Free Day activities, and act as hosts for various special events. As a benefit, volunteers receive special invitations to private exhibition tours and other LACMA activities. 

The volunteer selection and training process occurs as needed, usually once per year. Please check back in Summer 2026 for more details.

Docent Council

Members of the Docent Council engage with visitors of all ages through guided tours and casual dialogue to make works of art accessible for all. We are committed to inclusivity, access, and equity, and we believe that the Docent Council should represent the diversity of Los Angeles.

An art background is not required in order to be a docent. Prospective docents should have an interest in learning about art, working with audiences of all ages and backgrounds, and facilitating positive museum experiences. In addition to working with visitors, docents enjoy an extensive program of continuing education provided by staff members and local experts. Members of the Docent Council perform a unique form of philanthropy by donating their time in a way that supports LACMA and the visitors it serves.
