Upcoming Exhibition

Expressionisms: Japan, Germany, China

  • Dates: Mar 7–Aug 1, 2027
  • Location: Resnick Pavilion

In the first half of the 20th century, artists in Asia and Europe created a web of exchange that reshaped modern art. Expressionisms: Japan, Germany, China traces these connections—German artists inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, Japanese artists embracing bold new forms of self-expression, and Chinese printmakers turning the woodcut into a tool for social change. Bringing together some 200 prints, drawings, paintings, and periodicals, the exhibition recovers a story of mutual, cross-continental influence that is too often overlooked, revealing Expressionism not as a single movement but as many.
