Art of the Americas Building

Art + Technology Lab grant recipient Julia Christensen and scientist Dr. Anthony Freeman discuss how rapid technological progress impacts long-term scientific research, especially space exploration. Christensen’s ongoing art and research project, Upgrade Available, investigates the impact of “upgrade culture” on contemporary life; Freeman manages the Innovation Foundry at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where his team is working on a spacecraft concept to travel to a planet 4.2 light years from earth. As part of her Art + Technology Lab grant, Freeman invited Christensen to envision an artwork for this spacecraft concept, which will need to autonomously upgrade itself on its 40-year interstellar journey. This artwork will act as a successor to the Golden Record project, which was embedded on the Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Christensen and Freeman will discuss this collaborative project, which merges art, technology, and science.
