Evenings for Educators: Imagining Black Diasporas

Join us for an in-person exploration of Imagining Black Diasporas: 21st-Century Art and Poetics, which looks at nearly a quarter century of production by 60 Black artists working in Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Together, we’ll learn about the ways people reinvent their heritage through artistic expressions, viewing diaspora less as a displacement from one’s origins and more as a wellspring of imagination. Guests will enjoy talks, hands-on art-making workshops, and dinner.

Experience Ritual Expressions: African Adornment from the Permanent Collection with LACMA curator Sharon Takeda and the de Young Museum's Natasha Becker, inaugural Curator of African Art at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, where she stewards the arts of Africa collection and curates exhibitions that highlight the evolution of African artistic traditions.

Pigment and Perspective: A Deep Dive into Mesoamerican Color

As part of our quarterly tours of We Live in Painting: The Nature of Color in Mesoamerican Art, this tour will be led by Diana Magaloni, Deputy Director, Program Director of the Art of the Ancient Americas, and the Conservation Center Director at LACMA. It will delve into the invention and use of pigments, offering insights into the Mesoamerican worldview and the deep significance of color.

In conjunction with Imagining Black Diasporas: 21st-Century Art and Poetics, this interactive evening will guide participants through the process of rediscovering healing and joy. We'll explore the mental peaks and valleys of the past and how those influences continue to shape our future. Together, we will honor the hopes and dreams of those who came before us while fostering a community that inspires resilience and growth.
