The Boy and the Heron, 2023
Friday, July 25, 2025 | 8 pm (gates open at 6:30 pm)
The Los Angeles Times called The Boy and the Heron “Hayao Miyazaki at his most beautifully elegiac.” The story follows the young boy Mahito, who moves to the countryside after losing his mother in the war. There, a series of mysterious events lead him to a secluded and ancient tower, home to a mischievous gray heron, who beckons him into a fantastic world shared by the living and the dead. As he embarks on an epic journey with the heron as his guide, Mahito must uncover the secrets of this world, and the truth about himself.
The Wind Rises, 2013
Sunday, July 27, 2025 | 8 pm (gates open at 6:30 pm)
Miyazaki’s gorgeous The Wind Rises follows Jiro, a boy who dreams of soaring in the sky despite being disqualified from becoming a pilot, so he becomes a highly accomplished airplane designer. As rumors of war escalate, Jiro reunites with Nahoko, a young woman he met during the Great Kanto Earthquake years earlier. The two fall deeply in love, just as Nahoko falls ill with tuberculosis. Inspired by visions of Italian aeronaut Caproni, Jiro must confront mounting tragedies with dignity in this epic tale of love and perseverance.
Hosted by film critic and writer Carlos Aguilar and featuring trivia with prizes provided by Super Yaki.
