Celebrate L.A.’s finest jazz musicians with Jazz at LACMA, presented Friday evenings from May through October. This week, join us for a concert with the Angel City Jazz Festival, featuring The Gathering.
The Angel City Jazz Festival celebrates the 20th anniversary of The Gathering and salutes its leader, Jesse Sharps. Sharps brought together some of the hottest young players in Los Angeles with members of Horace Tapscott’s Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra for a historic recording. The session spawned The Gathering, an ongoing community band, a documentary film, and multiple recordings. This tribute to Jesse Sharps features conductor/French horn player Fundi Legohn, vocalist Dwight Trible, flutist Thomas Stones, saxophonist Randall Fisher, pianist Jamael Dean, bassists Nick Rosen and Roberto Miranda, and drummer Fritz Wise. The concert opens with the winning band from the Angel City Jazz Festival Young Artists Competition.
